Gastrointestinal Medical Oncologist, specializing in Gastrointestinal Cancers
Dr. Andrew S. Epstein, MD, is a board-certified medical oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center specializing in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers, including pancreas, biliary, esophagogastric, colon, and other GI malignancies. He works within a multidisciplinary team alongside surgeons, radiation therapists, and other specialists to deliver individualized care for patients with these diseases. Dr. Epstein holds a secondary academic appointment with the Supportive Care Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering, reflecting his deep commitment to integrating oncologic and palliative care across his clinical practice.
His research centers on improving the delivery of care to patients and their families by optimally integrating cancer care with palliative medicine, a specialty focused on reducing distress and maximizing quality of living for people with serious illnesses. To strengthen his ability to communicate with patients and address their symptoms and concerns, Dr. Epstein pursued an additional fellowship in palliative medicine beyond his medical oncology training. His work in patient-physician communication, coping, and cancer care planning has earned significant recognition, including a Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in 2010, a Career Development Award from the National Palliative Care Research Center in 2013, and a Sojourns Scholar Leadership Program award from the Cambia Health Foundation in 2017.
In addition to his clinical and research contributions, Dr. Epstein is a committed educator at Memorial Sloan Kettering. In collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, he teaches communication skills to medical oncology fellows, preparing the next generation of oncologists to engage more effectively and compassionately with their patients. His dual expertise in gastrointestinal oncology and palliative medicine positions him as a distinctive voice in efforts to improve both the quality of treatment and the human experience of cancer care.
