Dr. Alexandra M. Levine

Levine, MD, MACP, is a highly respected hematologist-oncologist at City of Hope, where she specializes in lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, AIDS-related malignancies, and hematologic conditions treated with stem cell transplantation. She earned her medical degree from the University of Southern California and completed her internal medicine training at LAC+USC Medical Center. She pursued fellowships in hematology and oncology at both Emory University School of Medicine and USC before joining the faculty at City of Hope. Over the course of her career, Dr. Levine has held numerous leadership roles, including serving as Chief Medical Officer, and she currently holds the title of Professor in the Department of Hematology & Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation. Her long-standing dedication to clinical excellence and institutional leadership has shaped the delivery of cancer care at one of the nation’s top cancer centers.
Dr. Levine is internationally recognized for her pioneering work in lymphoma and HIV-associated cancers. She has authored over 325 peer-reviewed publications and maintained continuous NIH research funding for three decades. A leader in AIDS-related cancer research, she collaborated with Dr. Jonas Salk on AIDS vaccine development for eight years and has contributed significantly to the understanding and treatment of immunodeficiency-associated malignancies. Her work in clinical and translational research has helped guide advancements in lymphoma therapy and stem cell transplantation. She has also served on national and international advisory boards, including the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS and the National Cancer Institute Board of Scientific Counselors, and has provided expert consultation to health ministries in countries including Chile, Russia, India, and China.
In addition to her contributions to research and patient care, Dr. Levine has had a lasting impact on medical leadership and education. As Chief Medical Officer at City of Hope, she oversaw clinical services, professional education, and research quality, influencing the institution’s strategic direction. Her leadership was honored through the creation of an endowed chair in her name. Known for advocating compassionate, patient-centered care, Dr. Levine has mentored generations of physicians and served as a vocal proponent for empathy in oncology.
