Dr. Anthony S. Stein, MD, is a nationally recognized leader in hematologic oncology and a longtime faculty member at City of Hope, where he specializes in acute leukemias and stem cell transplantation. He earned his medical degree from the University of Cape Town in South Africa and completed his residency in internal medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in Pittsburgh. He then pursued a fellowship in hematology and oncology at City of Hope, joining the faculty in 1988. He currently serves as Associate Director of the Gehr Family Center for Leukemia Research and is a Professor in the Division of Leukemia and Department of Hematology & Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation. With over 35 years of experience, Dr. Stein provides care for patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), myelodysplastic syndromes, and stem cell transplant candidates through in-person and telehealth appointments.

He is widely respected for his leadership in clinical research and trial development. He serves as principal investigator on multiple studies exploring new therapeutic agents for acute leukemias, including novel drugs and advanced conditioning regimens for transplantation. His work includes trials of venetoclax-based combinations and targeted agents in AML, and he participates in innovative studies examining total marrow and lymphoid irradiation with post-transplant cyclophosphamide. He also contributes to efforts involving cellular immunotherapies, such as NK- or CAR-T cell–based treatments for leukemia. His research activities extend across both early phase and practice-changing trials, helping bring novel treatments from the lab to clinical care.

Dr. Stein has earned significant recognition for his clinical and academic contributions. He received the Top Consenting Physician award for therapeutic studies and holds memberships in leading societies, including ASH, ASCO, SWOG, and the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation. As co-director of the Acute Leukemia Program, he plays a critical role in mentoring trainees, guiding institutional quality initiatives, and shaping leukemia care delivery. Through his dedication to patient-centered treatment, trial innovation, and educational leadership, he is regarded as one of the nation’s top experts in leukemia and hematopoietic cell transplantation.
