Dr. Armando E. Giuliano

Dr. Armando E. Giuliano, MD, is a widely respected surgical oncologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he serves as Executive Vice Chair of Surgical Oncology and Co-Director of the Saul and Joyce Brandman Breast Center. He received his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, completed his general surgery residency at the University of California, San Francisco, and went on to pursue fellowship training in surgical oncology at UCLA under Dr. Donald Morton. He holds the Linda and Jim Lippman Chair in Surgical Oncology and has practiced at Cedars-Sinai since 2001. Dr. Giuliano provides comprehensive surgical care for patients with all stages of breast cancer, offering in-person consultations and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver individualized treatment plans.

He is internationally recognized for pioneering sentinel lymph node biopsy in breast cancer surgery, a landmark advancement that dramatically reduced the need for complete axillary lymph node dissection. His leadership in clinical trials such as ACOSOG Z0011 and NSABP B-32 demonstrated that patients with limited nodal involvement could safely avoid more invasive procedures without compromising survival. These studies changed national and international guidelines, improving outcomes and quality of life for countless breast cancer patients. Dr. Giuliano has authored over 500 peer-reviewed publications and has received widespread recognition for translating surgical innovation into clinical practice. His contributions have had a lasting impact on breast cancer staging and surgical decision-making.

Beyond his research and clinical work, Dr. Giuliano is deeply involved in education and leadership within the surgical oncology community. He has trained nearly 100 breast surgical oncology fellows and has held prominent roles such as President of the Society of Surgical Oncology and the International Sentinel Node Society. He co-chaired the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) Breast Cancer Staging Committee and has been honored with numerous awards, including induction into the Giants of Cancer Care.
