Dr. Carey K. Anders
Medical Oncologist · Breast Cancer, Neurologic CancersDr. Carey K. Anders, MD, is a medical oncologist and physician-scientist specializing in breast cancer with a focus on brain metastases. She currently serves as Director of the Duke Center for Brain and Spine Metastasis and previously held the role of Chief of the Division of Medical Oncology at Duke University. Dr. Anders earned her medical degree from East Carolina University, completed her internal medicine residency and hematology-oncology fellowship at Duke, and has built a career dedicated to the advancement of precision medicine for breast cancer patients with central nervous system (CNS) involvement. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology.
A leader in translational and clinical research, Dr. Anders is known for her work in identifying molecular drivers of breast cancer brain metastases and developing novel therapeutic strategies to target them. Her research has contributed to the understanding of subtype-specific vulnerabilities in HER2-positive and triple-negative breast cancers, helping to guide clinical trial design and treatment selection. She has also worked to incorporate liquid biopsies and biomarker-driven approaches into the care of patients with CNS disease, influencing national guidelines and clinical practice.
In addition to her research and clinical leadership, Dr. Anders is a respected mentor and educator who has trained numerous fellows and junior faculty. She is a Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (FASCO) and has received several honors for her contributions to cancer research and care. Through her innovative work in neuro-oncology, her commitment to translational science, and her leadership in academic medicine, Dr. Carey Anders continues to shape the future of breast cancer research and the care of patients with brain metastases.
