Dr. Carl H. June, MD, is a pioneering immunologist and global leader in cellular immunotherapy, specializing in the development of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapies. He serves as the Richard W. Vague Professor in Immunotherapy and Director of the Center for Cellular Immunotherapies at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. Dr. June earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the National Naval Medical Center, and pursued fellowship training in Oncology at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology and is widely recognized for his leadership in advancing CAR T-cell therapy from bench to bedside.
A trailblazer in adoptive T-cell therapy, Dr. June was instrumental in developing the first FDA-approved CAR T-cell treatment for B-cell malignancies, revolutionizing care for patients with relapsed and refractory leukemia and lymphoma. His laboratory continues to drive innovations in engineered T-cell therapies, addressing challenges in tumor microenvironment resistance and expanding CAR T applications into solid tumors. Dr. June has authored over 500 peer-reviewed publications and has led pivotal clinical trials that have reshaped the treatment landscape for hematologic malignancies.
In addition to his research and clinical leadership, Dr. June is a dedicated mentor and international thought leader in immunotherapy. He has trained numerous physician-scientists who are advancing cellular therapies worldwide and continues to influence global immunotherapy strategies through advisory roles and collaborations. He has been honored with numerous prestigious awards, including the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences, and remains committed to driving scientific innovation that improves outcomes for cancer patients.
