Dr. Carolyn D. Britten, MD, is a medical oncologist and clinical investigator specializing in gastrointestinal cancers and early-phase clinical trials. She currently serves as Chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the Medical University of South Carolina and as Associate Director for Clinical Investigations at Hollings Cancer Center, an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center. Dr. Britten earned her medical degree from the University of Toronto, completed her internal medicine residency at the University of Western Ontario, and received fellowship training in medical oncology at the University of British Columbia. She is board-certified in Medical Oncology and is nationally recognized for her expertise in drug development and translational research.

Dr. Britten’s research focuses on first-in-human and biomarker-driven clinical trials aimed at developing new treatments for advanced solid tumors, including hepatobiliary, pancreatic, and colorectal cancers. She has led multiple early-phase studies and has played a key role in expanding clinical trial access for underserved populations through her leadership in the NCI Community Oncology Research Program. Her work emphasizes the translation of scientific discoveries into patient care, with a focus on precision medicine and equitable access to innovation.

Beyond her research, Dr. Britten is an active leader in academic oncology and medical education. She has served on advisory committees for the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the National Cancer Institute and is deeply engaged in mentoring fellows and junior faculty.
