Dr. David F. McDermott, MD, is a nationally recognized medical oncologist specializing in immunotherapy and kidney cancer. He serves as Chief of Medical Oncology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Co-Leader of the Kidney Cancer Program at Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center, and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. McDermott received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine and completed his residency and fellowship in hematology and oncology at Tufts-New England Medical Center. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology and is a leading figure in advancing immune-based therapies for renal cell carcinoma (RCC).
Dr. McDermott’s research has been central to the development and clinical application of immune checkpoint inhibitors and cytokine-based treatments in kidney cancer. He has served as principal investigator on numerous pivotal trials involving agents such as nivolumab, ipilimumab, and IL-2, helping define modern standards of care. His work has helped identify biomarkers of response and resistance, enabling more personalized approaches to immunotherapy. Dr. McDermott has also collaborated on strategies to combine immune-based therapies with targeted agents, further improving outcomes for patients with advanced RCC.
