Dr. Judy E. Garber, MD, MPH, is an internationally recognized medical oncologist specializing in breast cancer genetics and cancer risk assessment. She serves as Chief of the Division for Cancer Genetics and Prevention at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Garber earned her medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine, completed residency training in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and pursued fellowship training in hematology/oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. She also earned a Master of Public Health from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology.
Dr. Garber is a pioneer in hereditary cancer genetics, with a focus on BRCA1/2 mutations and other germline alterations that increase breast and ovarian cancer risk. Her research has shaped risk management strategies, prevention trials, and early detection protocols for high-risk patients. She has led major clinical and translational studies examining the role of targeted therapies, such as PARP inhibitors, in patients with inherited cancer predispositions. She has authored hundreds of publications and helped develop international guidelines for hereditary cancer management.
A past president of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), Dr. Garber has been widely recognized for her leadership in advancing precision prevention and cancer genetics. She is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and serves on numerous national advisory boards.
