Dr. Mark S. Litwin, MD, MPH, is a nationally and internationally recognized urologic oncologist and public health leader with expertise in the surgical and systemic treatment of urologic cancers, including testicular, bladder, kidney, and prostate malignancies. He serves as Chair of the Department of Urology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and holds joint faculty appointments in the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Litwin earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and completed residency training at UCLA, followed by a fellowship in urologic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Board-certified in Urology, he brings a uniquely integrative approach to patient care by combining surgical excellence with a strong foundation in health services research.
Dr. Litwin is widely regarded for his leadership in advancing health equity, quality-of-life research, and outcomes-based care in urologic oncology. His research focuses on improving the delivery of cancer care to vulnerable and underserved populations. As Principal Investigator of California's IMPACT program—Improving Access, Counseling, and Treatment for Californians with prostate cancer—he has revolutionized how healthcare systems address disparities in access and survivorship care. His academic contributions span more than 250 peer-reviewed publications and numerous book chapters, helping to redefine metrics of success in cancer treatment beyond survival alone to include patient-reported outcomes, functionality, and long-term wellness.
A dedicated mentor and educator, Dr. Litwin has trained generations of urologists, oncologists, and physician-scientists, while also playing a pivotal role in shaping national urologic guidelines and public policy. He holds leadership positions in professional organizations such as the American Urological Association and has been recognized repeatedly for his contributions to research, education, and public service. Through his work at the intersection of surgery, research, and public health, Dr. Litwin continues to lead transformative efforts that improve both individual and population-level outcomes in cancer care.
