Dr. Patrick J. Loehrer

Dr. Patrick J. Loehrer, MD, is a nationally recognized medical oncologist specializing in gastrointestinal malignancies and rare tumors, with particular expertise in thymoma and testicular cancer. He is the Distinguished Professor of Oncology at Indiana University School of Medicine, where he also served as Director of the IU Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Loehrer earned his medical degree from Rush Medical College, completed residency training in internal medicine at Rush Presbyterian–St. Luke’s Medical Center, and pursued fellowship training in medical oncology at Indiana University. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology and is widely acknowledged for his leadership in oncology research and education.

Dr. Loehrer’s research contributions include seminal work in thymoma and germ cell tumors, as well as clinical trials that have defined therapeutic standards in gastrointestinal cancers. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and has been principal investigator on cooperative group studies through the Hoosier Cancer Research Network and other consortia. His efforts have advanced access to clinical trials and improved the delivery of oncology care at both the state and national levels.

In addition to his research and clinical leadership, Dr. Loehrer is a respected educator and mentor. He has trained numerous fellows and junior faculty at Indiana University, fostering careers in academic medicine and oncology research. He has held leadership positions in ASCO and other national organizations, reflecting his influence on policy and standards of care.
