Dr. Peter R. Carroll, MD, MPH, is a prominent academic urologic oncologist whose work has fundamentally shaped the clinical and scientific understanding of prostate cancer. He is the Taube Family Distinguished Professor in Urology and holds the Ken and Donna Derr-Chevron Distinguished Professorship at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where he previously served as Chair of the Department of Urology for over two decades. Dr. Carroll completed his medical degree at Georgetown University, followed by residency training in general surgery and urology at UCSF. He pursued further specialization in urologic oncology as a fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center before joining the UCSF faculty in 1986.
Dr. Carroll is internationally recognized for his contributions to prostate cancer outcomes research, particularly in the areas of active surveillance, biomarker development, and risk stratification. He co-founded the UCSF Urologic Oncology Program and is a principal investigator for several major research initiatives, including CaPSURE™, a large-scale national prostate cancer registry, and the Prostate Active Surveillance Study (PASS). His scholarly output includes over 650 peer-reviewed publications, and his research has played a significant role in the refinement of clinical guidelines and surveillance-based management strategies for prostate cancer.
In addition to his research and institutional leadership, Dr. Carroll has held leadership roles in multiple national and international organizations in urology and oncology.
