Dr. Richard D. Carvajal, MD, is a nationally recognized medical oncologist specializing in the treatment of melanoma and rare cancers, including uveal melanoma and other non-cutaneous melanomas. He serves as Deputy Physician-in-Chief and Director of Medical Oncology at the Northwell Health Cancer Institute and is a Professor of Medicine at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Dr. Carvajal earned his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Michigan, followed by a fellowship in medical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology.
Dr. Carvajal is widely known for his pioneering research in precision oncology and the development of targeted therapies for melanoma and other rare tumors. His clinical and translational research has led to FDA approvals of novel treatments, including therapies for patients with metastatic uveal melanoma. He has served as principal investigator on numerous Phase I–III clinical trials and has authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications. He is a member of professional organizations such as the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Society for Melanoma Research.
