Dr. Richard J. Wong, MD, is a leading head and neck surgical oncologist renowned for his expertise in thyroid, parathyroid, and advanced head and neck cancers. He serves as Chief of the Head and Neck Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and is a Professor of Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Wong earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed his residency in general surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, followed by a fellowship in head and neck surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering. He is board-certified in Surgery and has built a distinguished career focused on complex oncologic procedures of the head and neck.
Dr. Wong’s clinical and research interests center on precision surgery, minimally invasive approaches, and the integration of molecular diagnostics in cancer management. He has played a pivotal role in advancing surgical care for thyroid and parathyroid tumors, as well as recurrent and high-risk head and neck malignancies. His research includes studies on cancer metastasis, tumor biology, and biomarker development. A prolific author, Dr. Wong has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and contributed to major surgical and oncologic textbooks. He is actively involved in clinical trials that seek to refine and personalize treatment for patients with head and neck cancer.
In addition to his clinical and research contributions, Dr. Wong is a respected educator and mentor, training the next generation of head and neck surgeons through his leadership at MSK. He holds leadership roles in professional organizations such as the American Head and Neck Society and the American College of Surgeons. Through his dedication to academic medicine, surgical innovation, and multidisciplinary collaboration, Dr. Wong continues to shape the evolving landscape of head and neck oncology.
