Transplant Hepatologist, specializing in Gastrointestinal Cancers
Dr. Robert S. Brown, MD, MPH, is a nationally recognized hepatologist specializing in liver disease, liver transplantation, and hepatocellular carcinoma. He serves as the Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian, and holds the Vincent Astor Distinguished Professorship of Medicine. Dr. Brown earned his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and completed his residency at Beth Israel Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He went on to complete fellowship training in gastroenterology and advanced hepatology at the University of California, San Francisco, and earned a Master of Public Health from UC Berkeley. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.
Dr. Brown is known for his leadership in liver transplantation and the management of complex liver diseases, including hepatitis B and C, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. He co-founded and previously directed the Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation at Columbia and Cornell, which became one of the nation's leading liver transplant programs. A prolific academic, Dr. Brown has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications and serves as Editor-in-Chief of Liver Transplantation, a leading journal in the field. His research has focused on liver transplant outcomes, antiviral therapies, and improving access to care for patients with end-stage liver disease.
In addition to his clinical and research accomplishments, Dr. Brown is a dedicated educator and mentor, training gastroenterology fellows and future transplant hepatologists. He holds leadership roles in several national organizations, including the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the American Society of Transplantation. Through his commitment to innovation, academic excellence, and collaborative care, Dr. Brown continues to advance the field of hepatology and liver transplantation on a national and international level.
