Dr. Thomas J. Rutherford, MD, PhD, is a highly respected gynecologic oncologist specializing in the treatment of ovarian, endometrial, cervical, and other gynecologic cancers. He serves as the Medical Director of the Cancer Institute at Tampa General Hospital and leads the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. Dr. Rutherford earned his medical degree from the University of Toledo College of Medicine and completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Cooper Hospital–University Medical Center. He went on to complete a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at Yale University School of Medicine, where he also earned a PhD in molecular biology. Board-certified in both Obstetrics & Gynecology and Gynecologic Oncology, Dr. Rutherford is widely regarded for his leadership in surgical innovation, cancer prevention, and comprehensive gynecologic cancer care.
An expert in advanced minimally invasive and robotic-assisted gynecologic oncology procedures, Dr. Rutherford has been at the forefront of integrating precision medicine into the care of patients with complex gynecologic malignancies. His research has helped shape national approaches to early detection, genetic screening, and individualized treatment planning for ovarian and endometrial cancers. In addition to his clinical and research roles, Dr. Rutherford is a dedicated educator and mentor. He previously served as Division Chief and Fellowship Director at Yale, where he trained numerous gynecologic oncology fellows and led academic efforts in women's cancer research. At Tampa General, he continues to guide multidisciplinary teams committed to improving outcomes for women with cancer. He is an active member of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology and other leading professional organizations.
