Myeloma Specialist, specializing in multiple myeloma
Dr. Francesco Maura, MD, is a hematologist specializing in multiple myeloma and plasma cell disorders at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). His clinical focus encompasses the full spectrum of plasma cell diseases, including monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), smoldering multiple myeloma, and active multiple myeloma. He provides expert care for patients with newly diagnosed disease as well as those with relapsed or treatment-resistant myeloma, for whom he considers salvage therapies and novel immunotherapies that harness the patient's own immune system to fight cancer. Central to his approach is empathy and clear communication, ensuring patients fully understand their diagnosis and treatment path while building a strong, open relationship that instills confidence in their care.
As a member of MSK's myeloma team, Dr. Maura is deeply committed to offering patients access to the latest available treatments and cutting-edge clinical trials. He dedicates more than half of his time to laboratory research, where his team studies single-cell and bulk whole genome and RNA sequencing data from B-cell tumors, including multiple myeloma. His research program focuses on using clinical and genomic data to better understand how multiple myeloma and other blood disorders, such as lymphomas and myeloid neoplasms, originate and develop. His goal is to develop genomics-based strategies that improve patient outcomes, prevent organ damage, and reduce treatment-related side effects.
Dr. Maura's mission is to execute research that directly informs and advances clinical practice in cancer care. By bridging laboratory discovery with patient care, he works to translate genomic insights into meaningful improvements for patients facing complex hematologic malignancies. Outside of his professional work, he enjoys spending time with his three boys.
