Myeloma Specialist, specializing in multiple myeloma
Dr. Hani Hassoun, MD, is a board-certified hematologist-oncologist with a focused expertise in plasma cell dyscrasias, a group of disorders encompassing multiple myeloma, amyloidosis, light chain deposition disease, POEMS syndrome, and Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia. He practices at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he works alongside colleagues to develop and optimize new treatment approaches for these conditions. His clinical work is informed by the rapid pace of progress in the field, including the emergence of several new drugs and treatment strategies aimed at improving patient outcomes.
Dr. Hassoun leads and participates in multiple clinical trials addressing critical questions in the management of plasma cell dyscrasias. In multiple myeloma, his research examines the role and timing of autologous stem cell transplantation in newly diagnosed patients, as well as novel therapeutic strategies for patients with relapsed or refractory disease. In amyloidosis and light chain deposition disease, he is investigating a comprehensive treatment approach that combines autologous stem cell transplantation with preceding and subsequent conventional therapies, with the goal of achieving optimal disease control. His work spans both frontline and recurrent disease settings, reflecting a broad commitment to advancing care across the treatment continuum.
In addition to his work in plasma cell disorders, Dr. Hassoun has a particular interest in thrombotic complications in cancer patients, including those arising in the setting of chemotherapy. His research in this area focuses on developing prophylactic strategies using both established and newer anticoagulants to reduce the frequency of blood clotting events in this vulnerable population. Through his combined focus on clinical trials, drug development, and complication prevention, he continues to contribute meaningfully to the care of patients with hematologic malignancies and related disorders.
