Bone Marrow Transplant Specialist & Cellular Therapist, specializing in bone marrow transplant
Dr. Heather J. Landau, MD, is a board-certified oncologist and hematologist specializing in plasma cell disorders, with particular expertise in multiple myeloma and light chain (AL) amyloidosis. She practices as part of a multidisciplinary team at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where she brings deep clinical and research experience to the care of patients with hematologic malignancies. Her focused subspecialty training and clinical work center on diseases arising from plasma cells, a category of white blood cells, and she is recognized for her command of both transplant-based and novel agent-based treatment strategies for these conditions.
Dr. Landau's research addresses some of the most pressing open questions in plasma cell disorder management. She is co-leading a clinical trial comparing the immunomodulatory agent lenalidomide against high-dose therapy and stem cell transplantation in newly diagnosed patients, seeking to clarify whether emerging novel therapies can rival or replace transplant early in the disease course. She is also leading a trial to define the most effective post-transplant maintenance therapy, and serves as principal investigator of an ongoing risk-adapted stem cell transplant trial in AL amyloidosis, for which she has presented results demonstrating significant clinical activity with low toxicity. For patients with relapsed disease, she investigates novel agents both alone and in combination. Her collaborative work with colleagues on T-cell-depleted allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation builds on a strategy pioneered at Memorial Sloan Kettering and aims to make donor-derived transplant options safer and more effective. She is also contributing to the development of outpatient transplant strategies using telehealth monitoring to improve patient accessibility and quality of life.
In addition to her clinical and research contributions, Dr. Landau is committed to education and mentorship, working with students and trainees from the undergraduate level through post-graduate training. Her approach reflects a broad dedication to advancing care for patients with plasma cell disorders through rigorous science, thoughtful clinical investigation, and a sustained investment in the next generation of physicians and researchers.
