Urologic Surgeon, specializing in Urologic Cancers
Dr. John P. Mulhall, MD, is a board-certified urologist and microsurgeon specializing in sexual and reproductive medicine and surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). He directs the Male Sexual and Reproductive Medicine Program, established as part of MSKCC's Survivorship Initiative, which is devoted entirely to the care of men who have experienced sexual difficulties or fertility problems as a result of cancer or cancer treatment. His team includes a nurse practitioner, a nurse, and a psychologist, and sees more than 2,000 patients each year. As a microsurgeon, Dr. Mulhall performs delicate procedures using operating microscopes and miniaturized precision instruments on the small structures of the genitourinary tract. His clinical expertise encompasses erectile dysfunction, Peyronie's disease, disorders of ejaculation and orgasm, low testosterone, male infertility, sperm extraction, and penile implant, varicocele, and penile reconstructive surgery.
Dr. Mulhall has developed well-established programs in penile rehabilitation and fertility preservation for men undergoing radical pelvic surgery, including radical prostatectomy, radical cystectomy, or rectal surgery, as well as pelvic radiation. His rehabilitation program aims to minimize the long-term sexual impact of these treatments, while his fertility preservation program focuses on sperm banking and testicular sperm extraction to protect reproductive potential. His laboratory research includes studying cell lines derived from Peyronie's disease plaque tissue and investigating methods to reduce erectile dysfunction following radical pelvic surgery, including novel drugs aimed at protecting erectile tissue and promoting erection nerve regeneration. His clinical research interests include new treatments for Peyronie's disease, the relationship between erectile dysfunction and cardiovascular disease, and clinical trials exploring erectile tissue preservation after radical prostatectomy. In 2008, he published "Saving Your Sex Life: A Guide for Men with Prostate Cancer," a patient-focused resource on the sexual effects of prostate cancer treatment and recovery strategies.
Dr. Mulhall is a respected leader in the field of sexual medicine, serving as secretary general of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America and as associate editor for the Journal of Sexual Medicine. He sits on the board of the Association of Peyronie's Disease Advocates, a nonprofit organization, and chairs their medical advisory board. His work is grounded in the recognition that sexual function and fertility are fundamental to quality of life, consistent with the World Health Organization's declaration that every person holds an unalienable right to sexual and reproductive health. Through clinical care, research, and advocacy, Dr. Mulhall remains committed to helping men and couples restore satisfying sexual relations and preserve fertility potential regardless of diagnosis or treatment.
