Thoracic Surgeon, specializing in Thoracic Cancers
Dr. Katherine Gray, MD, is a thoracic surgeon specializing in the surgical treatment of cancers of the chest at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. She completed training in both general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery, with extensive additional expertise in immunotherapy and other advanced cancer treatments. Dr. Gray is committed to providing safe, individualized care for every patient, recognizing that each person who comes to MSK brings a unique set of circumstances and needs. Her approach centers on guiding patients through all stages of the disease process, from diagnosis through treatment and recovery.
Dr. Gray performs the majority of her procedures robotically, including robotic lung resection, robotic esophagectomy, robotic bronchoscopy, and advanced endoscopic procedures. She embraces minimally invasive techniques because robotic surgery reduces postoperative pain and shortens recovery time, allowing patients to return to their lives more quickly. Her research interests focus on identifying which patients are most likely to benefit from specific treatments using the latest available techniques, and on studying the developmental pathway of esophageal cancer to better understand what drives the disease. This work reflects her dedication to bringing state-of-the-art, evidence-based care to her patients.
Central to Dr. Gray's practice is the belief that surgery is often just one component of a successful cancer treatment plan. She values the long-term relationships she builds with patients over the course of treatment and recovery, a connection she cites as a primary reason she chose to specialize in oncology. Outside of her clinical and research work, she enjoys cooking and exploring New York City with her husband and daughter.
