Dr. Kevin C. Soares

Dr. Kevin C. Soares, MD, MS, is a surgical oncologist with specialty training in hepatopancreatobiliary surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He focuses on the treatment of cancerous and noncancerous diseases of the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, and pancreas, as well as cancers that have spread to the liver. Born in Massachusetts to Portuguese immigrant parents, Dr. Soares completed both his undergraduate and medical education in Massachusetts before training in general surgery residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, where he spent eight years honing his surgical expertise prior to joining MSK in New York City.

Dr. Soares is committed to minimally invasive approaches, utilizing both robotic and laparoscopic techniques to treat a wide range of pancreas, liver, and gallbladder tumors. He also employs image-guided ablation, using heat and electricity to destroy tumors with precision. Beyond the operating room, he is actively involved in research into immunotherapy strategies for pancreatic, liver, bile duct, and gallbladder cancers. As part of a collaborative research team at MSK, he directs clinical trials testing new immunotherapies and combination approaches for hepatobiliary and pancreatic malignancies. He is also studying precancerous conditions of the pancreas, working to better understand how to manage pancreatic cysts and determine the appropriate timing for surgical intervention to prevent cancer development.

Dr. Soares places a strong emphasis on the patient-physician relationship, recognizing the uncertainty and vulnerability that patients and their families face at the time of a cancer diagnosis. From the first visit, he and his team work to build a genuine partnership with patients, helping them fully understand their condition and available treatment options. His goal is to guide patients through the challenges of their disease in the most efficient, safe, and appropriate way possible, with a focus on reducing stress and supporting recovery after surgery. Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time with his wife and children.
