Pediatric Hematologist-Oncologist
Dr. Kim Kramer, MD, is a pediatric oncologist at MSK Kids, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, specializing in the care of children with neuroblastoma and other cancers that have spread to the central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord. Her clinical and research focus centers on understanding why cancers spread to the central nervous system and identifying more effective treatments, particularly for relapsed or refractory disease. Deeply committed to her patients, Dr. Kramer works within a multidisciplinary team of researchers, nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, and research assistants, all united by the goal of improving outcomes for children with cancer.
Dr. Kramer leads translational research aimed at eliminating microscopic tumor cells within the central nervous system through novel approaches, including radioimmunotherapy, in which monoclonal antibodies are attached to radioactive substances and delivered directly into the cerebrospinal fluid. Her program is among a small number worldwide dedicated to treating cancers of the leptomeninges, the two innermost tissue layers covering the brain and spinal cord. A key motivation behind this work is reducing reliance on external-beam radiation therapy to the brain, which can cause developmental delays in young children. By targeting tumor cells with greater precision while sparing surrounding tissue from radiation side effects, Dr. Kramer's research holds meaningful promise for improving both survival and quality of life in pediatric patients.
Beyond her clinical and research contributions, Dr. Kramer is an active educator, teaching residents rotating through the service and mentoring fellows and medical students. She is also a committed advocate for the pediatric cancer community, serving as a board member for Kids V Cancer, Cookies for Kids Cancer, and Arms Wide Open, all organizations founded and led by the parents of her patients. She credits these families as vital partners in driving legislation, funding, and awareness for childhood cancers. Her ultimate goal is to see her patients return years later, healthy and thriving.
