Thoracic Surgeon, specializing in Thoracic Cancers
Dr. Matthew Bott, MD, is a thoracic surgeon specializing in the treatment of cancers of the chest, including lung cancer, esophageal cancer, thymic tumors, and neuroendocrine tumors. He brings extensive experience with the latest technology to diagnose and treat a wide variety of thoracic diseases affecting the lung, esophagus, and chest wall. His clinical expertise also extends to noncancerous conditions, including anti-reflux procedures and hiatal hernia repair. Seeing approximately 1,000 patients per year, Dr. Bott is committed to providing treatment options that deliver strong long-term outcomes while enabling patients to recover quickly and return to their daily lives. He performs most operations using minimally invasive techniques, which require smaller incisions and have been shown to minimize discomfort and speed recovery.
Dr. Bott focuses particular attention on early-stage disease, where surgery can offer the highest likelihood of cure. For patients with early-stage lung cancer, minimally invasive approaches and related techniques can reduce the long-term impact on breathing and overall health. He also applies his skills to improving symptoms and quality of life in patients with advanced cancer, working alongside colleagues in medical and radiation oncology to develop individualized treatment plans. As a co-investigator on clinical trials, he is evaluating the effectiveness of immunotherapy prior to surgery in patients with early-stage disease, and he performs lung biopsies using newer methods such as robotic bronchoscopy. A significant portion of his time is dedicated to scientific research aimed at better understanding tumor formation and investigating new treatments, using patient-centered experimental models with the goal of translating laboratory discoveries into more effective therapies for thoracic diseases.
Outside of his medical practice, Dr. Bott is an active family man who enjoys sports, outdoor activities, and travel. He participates in baseball, soccer, and scouting activities with his children, and pursues skiing, hiking, fishing, and running, having completed two marathons alongside his wife. He has a particular fondness for international travel, visiting family in Germany and France and exploring destinations including Peru, Vietnam, Cambodia, Australia, and China. During medical school, he participated in a mission trip to Ghana to deliver medical care to remote villages.
