Finding the Best Treatment for Simple Bone Cysts in Children
NCT02193841 · RecruitingThis trial looks at simple bone cysts, which are fluid-filled sacs that can occur in the long bones of children. These cysts are common and can cause discomfort and limit activities. The goal is to compare how well two treatments work for these cysts to find out which might be better.

Who can join
Children aged 2 to 21 can join if they have a simple bone cyst in an arm or leg. They should have had their last fracture at least 3 weeks ago and their last cyst treatment at least 3 months ago. Parents or guardians must agree to the trial. Some conditions, like certain bone diseases or being pregnant, will not allow participation. The trial team will confirm eligibility.
What happens during the trial
Participants will be randomly placed into one of two groups. One group will receive curettage with puncture alone, which means the cyst will be scraped out and a hole made. The other group will receive the same treatment, but will also get an injection of Vitoss morsels, a bone substitute, afterwards. Both groups will be monitored for how well their cysts heal over 2 years.
The trial team
The Hospital for Sick Children is leading this trial. Dr. James G. Wright and Dr. Sevan Hopyan are the principal investigators. They are working with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

The trial started in March 2015 and is expected to be completed by March 2027. It is currently recruiting new participants.

This is a Phase 3 trial, which means it is looking at how well the treatments work and how safe they are. The trial aims to include about 160 participants.
