About this trial
This study looks at a special camera that takes pictures of oral lesions, which are growths inside the mouth. The goal is to see if this new imaging technology, called reflectance confocal microscopy, can help doctors diagnose oral cancers early and guide surgical treatment. Researchers will compare the images from the camera to biopsy samples taken during surgery to see how well the camera works.
This trial's ID number is NCT02507141. It is an observational study, meaning it is looking at how well the new imaging tool works in real situations. The study aims to include around 140 participants.
Who can join
Adults aged 18 and older with confirmed oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) who are scheduled for surgery can join. Those with cancers in hard-to-image areas, or those unable to give consent, cannot participate. The trial is open to all genders and does not include healthy volunteers.
Conditions
Head and Neck Cancer, Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) of the Oral Cavity
Age group
Adult, Older adult

What happens in the study
Participants will receive imaging using reflectance confocal microscopy before their surgery. This process will take about 15 to 20 minutes. The images taken will be compared to the biopsy samples taken during surgery to check how well the camera captures the tissue details.
