Targeting Better Support for Lung Cancer Patients Through Communication Training

It aims to improve the way doctors and nurses interact with these patients to reduce feelings of stigma during medical visits. By teaching these skills, the trial hopes to improve both the medical care and emotional well-being of lung cancer patients.

Who can join
This trial is for adults aged 18 to 100, including men and women. Participants must be patients receiving care from a doctor or nurse involved in the study. They must speak English or Spanish and have a history of suspicious lung masses or lung cancer. Some patients may not be eligible if they have trouble making decisions about their care.
What happens during the trial
In this trial, some doctors and nurses will receive special training in empathic communication skills. Others will continue their usual practices for now and will receive the training later. Lung cancer patients will either interact with trained providers or be in a waitlist group until the training is available.
The trial team
The trial is led by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, with support from the American Cancer Society and the Go2 Foundation for Lung Cancer. Dr. Smita Banerjee is the principal investigator leading the study.

The trial started on April 28, 2023, and is expected to finish by August 31, 2026. It is currently recruiting new participants.
