Pediatric Hematologist-Oncologist & Bone Marrow Transplant Specialist
Dr. Andrew Kung, MD, PhD, is a physician-scientist and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he oversees the clinical, research, and educational missions of the department and MSK Kids. He specializes in caring for patients through cancer genomics, precision medicine, and stem cell transplantation, with a dedicated focus on identifying the causes of pediatric cancers and developing new treatments for children and adolescents with these diseases. Under his leadership, MSK Kids has grown into the largest pediatric oncology program in the United States, combining deep clinical expertise with the latest scientific approaches to develop individualized care plans while prioritizing patient well-being.
Dr. Kung's research is rooted in translational science, using cutting-edge technologies to pinpoint the molecular roots of cancer and apply those discoveries to improve pediatric cancer treatment. His work is bidirectional by design: findings from the laboratory inform patient care, and clinical outcomes in turn reveal new questions to pursue in the lab. This approach allows his team to continuously refine their understanding of how cancers develop and respond to therapy, bridging the gap between scientific discovery and real-world treatment for young patients.
As Department Chair, Dr. Kung is also deeply committed to training the next generation of leaders in pediatric oncology and the physician-scientists who will pioneer future therapies. Fellows trained through MSK's program carry their advanced knowledge and skills to hospitals and research institutions around the world, extending the reach of MSK's expertise far beyond its walls. At the core of all his efforts remains a steadfast commitment to the care and well-being of his young patients, a mission he pursues through collaboration with colleagues who share the same dedication to children with cancer and blood disorders.
