Pediatric Hematologist-Oncologist & Bone Marrow Transplant Specialist
Dr. Andrew Harris, MD, is a pediatric stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy specialist on the MSK Kids team at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He focuses on the treatment of children and adolescents with acute leukemia and on the management of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a serious complication of transplantation in which the donor's transferred immune system attacks the recipient's tissues. Dr. Harris brings a uniquely personal perspective to his work, having undergone a stem cell transplant himself for high-risk acute myeloid leukemia and experiencing steroid-refractory acute GVHD. That experience shaped a personal commitment to return to the field and improve the safety and effectiveness of transplant-related treatments for his patients.
Dr. Harris is actively involved in the leadership of clinical trials for pediatric acute leukemia and both acute and chronic GVHD conducted through the Children's Oncology Group (COG), the Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network (BMT CTN), and the Pediatric Transplant and Cellular Therapies Consortium (PTCTC). He leads the MSK Kids multidisciplinary pediatric GVHD clinic at the David H. Koch Center for Cancer Care and serves as clinical lead for an international study aimed at identifying novel blood-based biomarkers to improve the prediction and management of chronic GVHD, which typically emerges two months or more after transplant. His research and clinical efforts are directed at refining outcomes for some of the most vulnerable pediatric oncology patients.
Known for his compassionate and individualized approach to care, Dr. Harris takes particular care to ensure that each child and family fully understands the transplant process, its risks, and how the care team will support them throughout the journey. He values the trust families place in him and prioritizes building genuine personal relationships with his patients. Outside of medicine, Dr. Harris is the father of three teenagers, an avid soccer fan, and an enthusiast of the outdoors. His wife is a novelist whose work includes titles for Marvel's X-Men and Avengers series.
