Radiation Oncologist, specializing in Breast Cancer
Dr. Bruce G. Haffty, MD, is a nationally recognized radiation oncologist specializing in breast cancer and head and neck malignancies. He serves as Associate Vice Chancellor for Cancer Programs at Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences and is Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and New Jersey Medical School. Dr. Haffty received his medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency in radiation oncology. He is board-certified in Radiation Oncology and is widely recognized for advancing translational research and education in the field.
Dr. Haffty’s research has significantly contributed to understanding the genetic and molecular predictors of radiation response, particularly in patients with BRCA mutations and triple-negative breast cancers. His work has informed clinical decision-making in breast-conserving therapy and the use of post-mastectomy radiation. He has also led investigations into the integration of targeted therapies and immunotherapies with radiation, and he has been instrumental in developing clinical trials that personalize radiation treatment based on tumor biology.
An esteemed academic leader, Dr. Haffty has authored over 400 peer-reviewed publications and has served in numerous editorial and leadership roles, including as Deputy Editor of the Journal of Clinical Oncology. He is a past president of the American Radium Society and the American Board of Radiology, and currently serves as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). Dr. Haffty is deeply committed to education and mentorship, having established residency and training programs that have expanded access to radiation oncology education across New Jersey. His leadership continues to shape the field at the national level.
