Hematologist Oncologist, specializing in Hematologic Cancers
Dr. Raoul Tibes, MD, PhD, is a widely respected hematologist-oncologist and physician-scientist who leads innovative research in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). He currently serves as Director of the Clinical Leukemia Program at the University of Arizona Cancer Center and holds faculty appointments in translational cancer research. Dr. Tibes earned both his MD and PhD, then completed an internal medicine residency at NYU and a hematology/oncology fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Board-certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology, he treats patients with complex hematologic malignancies while advancing therapeutic strategies in both laboratory and clinical settings.
He is highly respected for his work in early-phase clinical trials and translational drug development targeting DNA-directed therapies in leukemia. Dr. Tibes has played a pivotal role in developing national treatment guidelines for leukemia and directing trials that combine hypomethylating agents like azacitidine with novel pathway inhibitors. His laboratory investigations delve into mechanisms of leukemia cell death and drug resistance, aiming to identify genetic vulnerabilities and enhance patient response. Many of the therapeutic regimens he has helped test are now being adopted into standard practice for MDS and AML, reflecting his impact on both scientific discovery and patient care.
Beyond his research and clinical duties, Dr. Tibes is a dedicated educator and national leader in hematologic oncology. He has served on expert panels and helps shape trial design through collaborations with organizations like SWOG and the MDS Foundation. He is frequently invited to speak at major scientific conferences, including the American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting, and mentors emerging physicians and scientists. Through his integrated roles in patient care, clinical-trial leadership, and educational mentorship, Dr. Tibes is recognized as a top expert driving progress in leukemia and MDS therapy.
