Dr. Sam S. Yoon, MD, is a nationally recognized surgical oncologist specializing in soft tissue sarcomas, gastric cancers, and complex abdominal tumors. He serves as Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Professor of Surgery at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Yoon earned his medical degree from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, completed his general surgery residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, and pursued fellowship training in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He is board-certified in Surgery.
Dr. Yoon is widely known for his expertise in the surgical management of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), retroperitoneal sarcomas, and peritoneal surface malignancies. His research has focused on combining surgery with novel systemic therapies to enhance outcomes, as well as exploring tumor biology to identify predictive markers of response. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and serves as a principal investigator on clinical trials investigating targeted therapies and immune-based approaches for rare tumors. His work has helped shape multidisciplinary treatment strategies for high-risk and recurrent malignancies.
In addition to his clinical and research leadership, Dr. Yoon is a dedicated educator and mentor to surgical residents and fellows. He holds leadership roles in national surgical and oncology societies, including the Society of Surgical Oncology and the American College of Surgeons. Through his commitment to academic excellence, translational research, and multidisciplinary cancer care, Dr. Yoon continues to advance the field of surgical oncology both at Columbia and nationally.
