Hematologist Oncologist, specializing in Hematologic Cancers
Dr. Thomas P. Loughran, Jr., MD, is an internationally recognized hematologist and leading expert in rare lymphoproliferative disorders, most notably known for his discovery and characterization of large granular lymphocyte (LGL) leukemia. He serves as Director of the University of Virginia Cancer Center and holds the Deans Distinguished Professorship in Hematology/Oncology. Dr. Loughran earned his medical degree from Hahnemann Medical College, completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Presbyterian University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, and pursued fellowship training in Hematology/Oncology at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Hematology and is recognized for his lifelong dedication to translational hematologic research.
A seminal figure in the field of T-cell malignancies, Dr. Loughran’s identification of LGL leukemia established the foundation for ongoing investigations into chronic immune activation, leukemic pathogenesis, and autoimmune complications associated with this rare disorder. His laboratory’s work has elucidated key molecular and immunologic mechanisms driving disease progression, informing novel therapeutic strategies that address both malignant proliferation and immune dysregulation. Dr. Loughran has authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications and has led multiple NIH-funded research initiatives that bridge laboratory discovery with clinical translation in hematologic oncology.
In addition to his scientific leadership, Dr. Loughran is a dedicated mentor and visionary academic leader. Under his direction, the UVA Cancer Center achieved NCI-Designation, expanding its translational research programs and clinical trial infrastructure. He has mentored numerous physician-scientists who are now advancing the field of hematologic malignancies worldwide. Through his ongoing contributions to research, education, and institutional leadership, Dr. Loughran continues to shape the future of translational hematology and rare cancer research.
