Gastrointestinal Medical Oncologist & Cellular Therapist, specializing in Gastrointestinal Cancers
Dr. Geoffrey Y. Ku, MD, is a medical oncologist specializing in gastrointestinal cancers, with a particular focus on esophageal and gastric malignancies. He serves as Head of the Esophagogastric Section in the Gastrointestinal Oncology Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK), and since 2020 has also held an appointment on the Cellular Therapy Service, where he investigates novel cellular therapies including chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy. Dr. Ku earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, completed his internal medicine residency at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital at Weill Cornell, and pursued his medical oncology fellowship at MSK. He then spent an additional year at the Ludwig Center for Cancer Immunotherapy at MSK, where his research focused on translational correlative assays in the emerging field of immunotherapy.
Dr. Ku's current research centers on developing new treatments for patients with esophageal and gastric cancers, including the combination of chemotherapy and radiation for esophageal cancer, as well as cellular therapies, immunotherapy, and targeted therapies aimed at both curing cancer and minimizing its symptoms. He is a member of the National Cancer Institute's Esophagogastric Task Force and NRG Oncology's Gastrointestinal Non-Colorectal Cancer Core Committee. He has served on the Scientific Program Committee of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) for the Gastrointestinal Non-Colorectal Cancer Track, including as Track Leader for 2015-2016, and contributed to a Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) panel developing guidelines for the use of immunotherapy in gastrointestinal cancers.
Beyond his research and leadership roles, Dr. Ku is deeply committed to individualized, compassionate patient care. He and his team approach each patient with the same level of attention and dedication they would extend to their closest family members and friends, recognizing the profound physical and emotional vulnerability that patients and their families face at the time of a cancer diagnosis. His work at MSK, an institution singularly dedicated to cancer treatment and research, reflects his commitment to bringing expertise, humanity, and innovation to every aspect of oncologic care.
