Cellular Therapist
Dr. Michael V. Gormally, MD, PhD, is a medical oncologist and physician-scientist specializing in cellular therapies for solid tumors at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). As a member of MSK's Cellular Therapy Service, he develops novel cancer treatments that harness the body's immune system, including specially engineered T cells, for patients whose cancers have not responded to standard therapies. He provides direct clinical care for patients with advanced cancers who are candidates for clinical trials involving engineered immune cells, many of which are developed at MSK. His approach to patient care centers on ensuring that individuals with limited standard treatment options fully understand the science and strategy behind each therapeutic approach, enabling confident and informed decision-making.
Dr. Gormally's research focuses on discovering and developing new classes of personalized cell therapies for solid tumors, with several of his group's findings already being evaluated in early-phase clinical trials. He is committed to a bench-to-bedside model, translating laboratory discoveries into real treatment options for patients. His work also examines mechanisms of resistance to immune-based therapies, including how cancers evade immune recognition by downregulating signals such as HLA, and how cell therapies can be designed to overcome those resistance mechanisms. His research program reflects a broad commitment to advancing the field of immuno-oncology through both scientific discovery and clinical translation.
Outside of his clinical and research work, Dr. Gormally is known for his personal determination and love of challenge. He has guided mountaineering expeditions in the Bolivian Andes and the Rockies, completed a solo swim of the English Channel, and runs the NYC Marathon annually as part of MSK's Fred's Team. He brings that same focus and resolve to his work with patients, approaching each case with the conviction that innovation in cancer care can and should translate into meaningful options for those who need them most.
