Head and Neck Surgeon, specializing in Head and neck cancers
I am a surgeon who has worked at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) for more than a decade. My focus is taking care of people who have been diagnosed with cancers of the head and neck such as:
Beyond cancer care, I have expertise in performing procedures for complex airway stenosis (narrowing of the windpipe), and I also provide care for acutely ill patients at Memorial Hospital as a member of the surgical critical care team.
At MSK, we have a team of experts who have devoted their careers to the cure of head and neck cancers and the rehabilitation of people after treatment for these diseases. I will lead your treatment team and work with you to develop the most effective strategy possible.
Recognizing that every person is unique and that there is often more than one “right” approach, I work with my patients to develop a customized plan of treatment. For certain tumors, I perform minimally invasive surgery using endoscopic techniques, which improves outcomes and speeds recovery. For people who have thyroid cancer that is at very low risk of growing and spreading, we have championed and shown the safety and efficacy of active surveillance — which can allow some patients to avoid surgery altogether.
Despite tremendous advances in cancer care, we still have a very long way to go. I am the director of a cancer biology research laboratory at MSK. I lead a team of scientists who are experts in cancer genetics and immunology, and together we carry out investigations that help us better understand how tumors operate, and how we can develop better therapies to end cancer.
Every day at MSK, I am inspired by my patients and their families, and the bravery they did not know they had. I am also very proud of all my teammates on Fred’s Team, with whom I have run more than 10 New York City Marathons to raise money for cancer research at MSK.
