Evaluating Lanreotide to Prevent Pancreatic Complications Before Surgery

This study looks at whether lanreotide can help prevent a complication called a pancreatic fistula in patients with pancreatic cancer or a related condition. A pancreatic fistula can happen after surgery when there is a small leak from the pancreas. This trial compares using lanreotide before surgery to just having the surgery. The goal is to see if lanreotide can lower the chances of developing a pancreatic fistula after surgery.

Who can join
Adults aged 18 and older can join if they have confirmed pancreatic cancer or a related lesion. Participants must be scheduled for a specific type of surgery within 60 days. Those with certain medical conditions or treatments in the past 180 days may not be eligible. The trial team will confirm eligibility before enrollment.
What happens during the trial
Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group will receive lanreotide before surgery, while the other group will receive a saline placebo (a harmless solution). Everyone will have blood samples taken before and after surgery. The study will track how many participants develop a pancreatic fistula and how long they stay in the hospital after surgery.
The trial team
The trial is sponsored by the SWOG Cancer Research Network, with collaboration from the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Jonathan G Sham is the principal investigator leading the study.

The trial started on May 9, 2025, and is expected to finish by November 1, 2027. It is currently enrolling new participants.
