This trial looks at how well proton beam radiation therapy works compared to intensity modulated photon radiation therapy for treating stage I-IVA esophageal cancer. Proton therapy uses protons to target tumors while protecting healthy tissue. In contrast, photon therapy uses high-energy x-rays to do the same. The main goal is to see which treatment helps patients live longer and with fewer side effects.
This trial is labeled as Phase 3, which means it is looking at how well the treatments work and their safety. The trial is not regulated by the FDA for drugs or devices. It hopes to include around 300 participants.
Who can join
This study is for adults aged 18 and older, including both men and women. Participants must have a specific type of esophageal cancer at stages I to IVA. Those with certain health issues or previous treatments may not be able to join. The trial team will check to confirm who can participate.
The study team makes the final call on eligibility.
What happens in the study
Participants will be randomly placed in one of two groups. In Group I, patients will receive proton beam therapy along with chemotherapy. In Group II, patients will receive photon therapy along with chemotherapy. Both groups will undergo treatment 5 days a week for about 5.5 weeks and will have tests and blood samples taken throughout the study.
