Bone Marrow Transplant Specialist & Cellular Therapist, specializing in bone marrow transplant
Dr. Brian Shaffer, MD, is a board-certified hematologist specializing in bone marrow transplantation at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. His clinical expertise encompasses the treatment of leukemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, lymphoma, and other bone marrow disorders. Working closely with a multidisciplinary team, Dr. Shaffer provides comprehensive, collaborative cancer care to patients facing complex hematologic conditions.
Dr. Shaffer's research focuses on the role of Natural Killer (NK) cells in transplantation outcomes. NK cells are white blood cells with both anti-tumor and anti-infection properties, and his work aims to better understand and optimize their behavior in order to improve the transplantation process for patients. His goal is to harness insights from NK cell biology to translate directly into better outcomes in clinical practice.
Dr. Shaffer also has a particular clinical interest in advancing transplantation methods for patients who do not have a matched sibling donor, a challenging population that requires specialized and innovative approaches. Through his combination of research and patient care, he continues to work toward expanding access to effective transplantation options and improving outcomes for patients with hematologic malignancies and bone marrow disorders.
