Dr. B. Mark Evers, MD, FACS, is a nationally recognized surgical oncologist and physician-scientist specializing in gastrointestinal cancers, with a particular focus on colorectal and neuroendocrine tumors. He serves as Director of the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center, where he also holds the Markey Cancer Foundation Endowed Chair and serves as Vice President for Oncology Services at UK HealthCare. Dr. Evers earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee and completed a residency in general surgery at the University of Louisville, followed by fellowship training in surgical research at the University of Texas Medical Branch. He is board-certified in General Surgery and is widely known for his leadership in cancer center development and translational oncology.
Dr. Evers is an expert in the molecular mechanisms regulating tumor growth and metabolism, with research focusing on the mTOR signaling pathway, tumor metabolism, and the role of neurotensin and gut hormones in cancer progression. He has led major NIH-funded programs investigating therapeutic targets in gastrointestinal malignancies and has been instrumental in the development and use of patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models to advance precision medicine. Under his leadership, the Markey Cancer Center achieved National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation in 2013 and earned Comprehensive Cancer Center status in 2023, a reflection of his commitment to expanding access to cutting-edge cancer care and research in underserved regions.
In addition to his research and institutional leadership, Dr. Evers is a dedicated educator, mentor, and national leader in academic surgery. He has authored over 400 peer-reviewed publications and numerous book chapters, and has held editorial roles for leading surgical and oncology journals. He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and has served as President of the Society of University Surgeons, the Southern Surgical Association, and the American Surgical Association.
