Dr. Barbara L. McAneny, MD, is a nationally recognized medical oncologist and health policy leader with a longstanding commitment to transforming cancer care delivery. She is the founder and CEO of New Mexico Oncology Hematology Consultants and serves as Chief Executive Officer of the New Mexico Cancer Center, a multidisciplinary community-based practice she helped build to expand access across the state. Dr. McAneny received her medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine and completed residency and fellowship training at the University of New Mexico. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Medical Oncology, and is known for her visionary work in community oncology and healthcare reform.
As an advocate for value-based cancer care, Dr. McAneny led the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation-funded COME HOME (Community Oncology Medical Home) project, which developed a novel model for improving care coordination and reducing unnecessary hospitalizations in oncology. This program became a national prototype for oncology payment reform and helped define clinical pathways in outpatient cancer management. Dr. McAneny has also been active in organized medicine, having served as President of the American Medical Association (AMA) from 2018 to 2019, where she was a prominent voice on physician-led innovation and healthcare equity.
Beyond her clinical and policy leadership, Dr. McAneny has worked to support patients through the New Mexico Cancer Center Foundation, which she co-founded to provide financial assistance for non-medical needs. She has received numerous awards for her service and leadership, including recognition as a Master of the American College of Physicians and Fellow of ASCO. Through her pioneering work in community practice transformation, patient advocacy, and national health policy, Dr. Barbara McAneny continues to lead systemic change in cancer care delivery.
