Gynecologic Surgeon, specializing in Gynecologic Cancers
Dr. Carol L. Brown, MD, is a trailblazing gynecologic oncologist and healthcare equity leader specializing in the surgical and medical management of gynecologic cancers. She serves as Senior Vice President and Chief Health Equity Officer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where she also holds the Nicholls-Biondi Chair for Health Equity. Dr. Brown earned her medical degree from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She pursued fellowship training in gynecologic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and has been a member of its faculty since 1994.
A pioneer in addressing cancer disparities, Dr. Brown has led programs that integrate precision medicine, clinical trials, and cancer screening into underserved communities. She is the principal architect of MSK’s Cancer Health Equity Research Program (CHERP) and directs the IMPACTED initiative, which expands access to genomic profiling for patients from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. Her leadership has advanced models for community oncologist partnerships that bring cutting-edge treatments and diagnostic innovations to populations historically underrepresented in cancer research. Dr. Brown has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and contributed to national strategies aimed at eliminating disparities in cancer care.
In addition to her clinical and research leadership, Dr. Brown is a committed educator and policy leader. She served as the 50th President of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology, the first African American woman to hold the position, and is a Co-Chair of the NRG Oncology Health Disparities Committee. She was appointed to the President’s Cancer Panel, advising federal policy on equitable cancer care delivery. Dr. Brown has received numerous awards, including the Jane Cooke Wright Lectureship from the AACR and the Distinguished Alumna Award from Columbia University. Through her dedication to health equity, mentorship, and institutional leadership, Dr. Carol L. Brown continues to transform access to gynecologic cancer care for underserved populations.
