Dr. James A. Bonner

Dr. James A. Bonner, MD, is an internationally recognized radiation oncologist whose pioneering research has reshaped the treatment of head and neck cancers. He serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine, where he also holds the Merle M. Salter Endowed Chair. Dr. Bonner earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia, completed his residency in radiation oncology at the University of Michigan, and is board-certified in Radiation Oncology.

Dr. Bonner’s landmark clinical trial demonstrating the survival benefit of combining cetuximab, an EGFR-targeting monoclonal antibody, with radiation therapy for locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck fundamentally changed global treatment standards. His ongoing research explores biomarkers for treatment response, novel radiosensitizing agents, and the integration of immunotherapy with precision radiation approaches. He has published extensively in high-impact journals and has served on editorial boards and national guideline committees, influencing practice standards worldwide.

In addition to his research leadership, Dr. Bonner is deeply committed to education and mentorship. He has trained numerous residents and fellows who have gone on to leadership roles in academic and clinical oncology.
