Dr. Mario M. Leitao Jr

160 East 53rd Street, New York, NY 10022

Dr. Leitao is Fellowship Director of the Gynecology Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and holds leadership of the Minimal Access and Robotic Surgery Program. His operative focus spans complex cytoreduction for ovarian cancer and fertility-sparing trachelectomy for early cervical disease. All surgical plans begin with high-resolution imaging and multidisciplinary discussion, which aligns resection strategy, lymph-node assessment, and adjuvant therapy to tumour biology.

Research guides his clinical judgment. Early laboratory work defined patterns of endocrine-resistant disease, but his current scholarship concentrates on surgical innovation and quality-of-life metrics after minimally invasive hysterectomy. Peer-reviewed publications examine sentinel-node mapping, robotic radical hysterectomy, and outcomes of repeated cytoreduction. These data shape cooperative-group protocols and inform guidelines on organ preservation in gynaecologic oncology.

Education and mentorship complete his profile. Dr. Leitao trains fellows in evidence-based decision-making, co-chairs national courses on robotic technique, and advocates for equitable surgical training through roles in professional societies. Awards such as the Michael E. Burt Memorial Award for Clinical Excellence and the Council on Resident Education National Faculty Award recognise his commitment to patient care and learner development.
