Dr. Mario M. Leitao Jr., MD, is a preeminent gynecologic oncologist recognized for his mastery of minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques in the treatment of ovarian, uterine, cervical, and pelvic malignancies. He leads the Minimal Access and Robotic Surgery Program and serves as Director of the Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Leitao earned his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey, completed his OB/GYN residency at the same institution, and pursued fellowship training in gynecologic oncology at MSKCC. He is board-certified in both Obstetrics & Gynecology and Gynecologic Oncology.
An innovator in precision surgical care, Dr. Leitao is celebrated for integrating robotic-assisted surgery into the management of complex gynecologic cancers, with particular emphasis on fertility preservation and enhanced perioperative recovery. His clinical leadership has resulted in streamlined protocols that combine oncologic rigor with minimally invasive techniques, offering patients optimal outcomes with reduced morbidity. His scholarly contributions include over 200 peer-reviewed publications, extensive textbook chapters, and active participation in clinical trials aimed at optimizing surgical and therapeutic strategies.
In addition to his clinical and research excellence, Dr. Leitao is a dedicated educator and mentor. He trains fellows and surgical trainees through MSKCC’s rigorous gynecologic oncology program and contributes to national guidelines and professional societies including the Society of Gynecologic Oncology and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Through his unwavering commitment to surgical innovation, compassionate patient care, and academic leadership, Dr. Leitao continues to advance the standard of care in women’s cancer surgery and education.
