Dr. Nadeem R. Abu-Rustum

212-639-7051

Dr. Abu-Rustum directs the Gynecology Service at MSK and holds the Founder’s Chair in Gynecologic Oncology. Steering a fifteen-surgeon team that performs more than three-thousand procedures annually, he emphasises data-driven decision-making that begins with high-resolution MRI, ultrastaging of sentinel nodes, and comprehensive germ-line and somatic testing. Weekly tumour boards integrate these findings with patient-reported goals, ensuring that operative, radiation, and systemic strategies align before the first incision.

His investigative work introduced sentinel-lymph-node (SLN) mapping for uterine and cervical cancers, a technique now embedded in NCCN guidelines worldwide. Publications describing the SLN algorithm, fertility-preserving radical trachelectomy, and minimally invasive radical hysterectomy shifted surgical standards while reducing morbidity. Recent projects explore fluorescence-guided resection and machine-learning prediction of nodal metastasis, sustaining his record of translating innovation into practice.

Beyond the operating theatre, Dr. Abu-Rustum chairs three NCCN panels, mentors fellows through international workshops on transanal and robotic pelvic surgery, and testifies on women’s-health policy in New York City. His outreach includes Arabic-language webinars for patients in the Middle East and leadership of global sentinel-node mapping courses that extend evidence-based techniques to low-resource settings.
