Dr. Mark L. Urken, MD, is an internationally recognized expert in head and neck surgical oncology, acclaimed for his pioneering work in microvascular reconstruction and thyroid cancer surgery. He is a Professor of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where he previously served as Department Chair. Dr. Urken earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine and completed his residency at Mount Sinai, followed by advanced fellowship training in head and neck surgery and reconstructive microsurgery. Board-certified in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, he has dedicated his career to the comprehensive treatment of complex head and neck malignancies, including thyroid and salivary gland cancers.
Dr. Urken is widely regarded for his innovative surgical techniques, particularly his contributions to microvascular free flap reconstruction. His work has transformed the landscape of head and neck surgery by enabling functional and aesthetic restoration following extensive oncologic resections. He is the author of two landmark surgical texts and has published over 170 peer-reviewed articles and numerous book chapters, shaping best practices in head and neck reconstruction globally. His expertise has earned him international acclaim, with invited lectures and surgical demonstrations in over 20 countries.
In addition to his clinical and academic accomplishments, Dr. Urken is a passionate educator and mentor. He leads one of the world’s premier head and neck surgery fellowship programs and serves as Medical Director of the THANC (Thyroid, Head and Neck Cancer) Foundation, advancing research, education, and patient advocacy. He also directs the Functional Outcomes Research Center at Mount Sinai, furthering innovations in surgical quality of life. Through his relentless dedication to surgical excellence, research, and mentorship, Dr. Urken continues to redefine the standards of care in head and neck oncology.
