Dr. Richard R. Barakat, MD, is an internationally renowned gynecologic oncologist and healthcare leader with decades of experience in the surgical and multidisciplinary treatment of gynecologic cancers. He serves as Physician-in-Chief and Executive Director of the Northwell Health Cancer Institute, and Senior Vice President of Cancer Services at Northwell Health. Dr. Barakat is also Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. He received his medical degree from SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, completed residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at New York University Medical Center, and pursued a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he later served as Director of Gynecology.

Dr. Barakat is widely recognized for his expertise in advanced pelvic surgery, minimally invasive approaches, and the development of enhanced recovery protocols in gynecologic oncology. His research has focused on quality-of-life outcomes, survivorship, and surgical innovation, and he has authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications, abstracts, and book chapters. He is the editor of a leading textbook in gynecologic oncology and has played a central role in shaping clinical guidelines and national standards for the treatment of ovarian, endometrial, and cervical cancers. His contributions have earned him leadership roles in major national cooperative groups and professional organizations.

In addition to his clinical and research leadership, Dr. Barakat is a dedicated educator and strategic leader in academic medicine. He has mentored countless residents and fellows and has been instrumental in expanding cancer programs across large health systems. Dr. Barakat has held prominent positions in professional societies such as the Society of Gynecologic Oncology and the American College of Surgeons. Through his visionary leadership, scholarly impact, and commitment to training the next generation of oncologists, Dr. Barakat continues to shape the landscape of gynecologic cancer care.
