Dr. Robert C. Bast Jr.

Dr. Robert C. Bast Jr., MD, is a pioneering medical oncologist and cancer biologist whose discovery of CA-125 revolutionized the early detection of ovarian cancer. He serves as Vice President for Translational Research at MD Anderson Cancer Center and holds the Harry Carothers Wiess Distinguished University Chair in Cancer Research. Dr. Bast earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and pursued fellowship training in Medical Oncology at the National Cancer Institute. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology and is internationally recognized for his contributions to cancer biomarker research and translational oncology.

Dr. Bast’s research has focused on developing strategies for the early detection of ovarian and other gynecologic cancers, as well as elucidating molecular mechanisms of tumor growth and therapeutic resistance. His laboratory has been at the forefront of integrating biomarker discovery with novel therapeutic approaches to enhance early intervention and improve survival outcomes. He has authored over 500 peer-reviewed publications and has played a pivotal role in numerous clinical trials and collaborative research initiatives.

In addition to his scientific leadership, Dr. Bast is a dedicated mentor and educator, having trained numerous physician-scientists who have become leaders in academic oncology. He has served on advisory boards for national and international cancer research organizations and has been honored with prestigious awards for his contributions to translational research.
