Dr. William G. Nelson

Dr. William G. Nelson, MD, PhD, is a nationally recognized medical oncologist and cancer researcher specializing in prostate cancer and cancer prevention. He serves as Director of the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins and is the Marion I. Knott Professor of Oncology. Dr. Nelson earned his medical degree and PhD in pharmacology from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in medical oncology. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology and is widely regarded for his leadership in translational research and cancer prevention.

Dr. Nelson’s research has focused on the molecular alterations underlying prostate carcinogenesis and the development of new strategies for early detection, treatment, and prevention of cancer. He has been instrumental in advancing epigenetic research in oncology, identifying DNA methylation changes as biomarkers for early cancer detection. His work has significantly shaped the field of precision prevention and the development of chemopreventive interventions. He has authored more than 400 peer-reviewed publications and is a frequent contributor to national cancer policy discussions.

In addition to his scientific contributions, Dr. Nelson is a prominent leader in oncology. Under his directorship, Johns Hopkins has expanded its cancer research programs, clinical trials infrastructure, and community outreach initiatives. He serves on multiple national boards and advisory panels, including the National Cancer Advisory Board and the American Association for Cancer Research.
