Dr. Giacomo Montagna

Dr. Giacomo Montagna, MD, MPH, is a breast surgeon at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) who treats patients with both benign and malignant breast diseases. Experienced in the latest surgical approaches across a full range of breast procedures, he brings a patient-centered philosophy to every consultation. He recognizes that patients often arrive frightened and full of questions about how their diagnosis and treatment will affect their quality of life. He takes the time to clearly answer those questions, understand individual concerns, and explain available options, with the goal of ensuring each patient leaves with a thorough understanding of their disease and a clear, informed treatment plan.

At MSK, Dr. Montagna works as part of a multidisciplinary team dedicated to delivering the highest quality of care tailored to each patient's personal needs and preferences. He has a particular research interest in rare breast cancers, including metaplastic breast cancer and phyllodes tumors, which together account for approximately 1% of all breast cancers. These tumors have distinct biology from more common breast cancers such as ductal or lobular cancer, yet a significant lack of research data means they are currently managed using general breast cancer guidelines rather than disease-specific evidence. Dr. Montagna is committed to changing that through focused investigation in this underserved area.

To advance care for patients with uncommon diagnoses, Dr. Montagna co-leads MSK's Rare Breast Cancer Program alongside colleague Dr. Nour Abuhadra. The program's mission is to support patients with rare breast tumors throughout their entire cancer journey while driving forward research in the field. His dual commitment to individualized clinical care and the study of poorly understood breast tumor types reflects a broader dedication to improving outcomes for all patients, including those whose conditions fall outside the mainstream of breast oncology.
